School Updates

RDL Learning Plans – March 2020

We know that this is a time of incredible transition, and that most parents are wondering how it is that they’ve been thrown into a teaching career overnight?!  J  We will navigate this together. 

As we move forward these days, we want to ensure that everyone is clear about the learning for students.  On Mon. March 23rd, teachers sent home their first weekly learning plan for their students, with a focus on Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.  Elementary students K-6 should have received this from their homeroom teachers, and Junior High students should have received messages from their core subject teachers, directing them to Google Classroom.

More than anything else, this week’s work is about getting into new routines in a new location, and asking questions.  All the staff are here to support you, so please reach out via email, Remind, or phone the school.  One caution re sending teachers email:  We are all in the habit of checking our regular email (ends in @fsd38.ab.ca) but aren’t necessarily in the habit yet of checking our “gmail” (ends in gm.fsd38.ab.ca).  If you’re not getting a response from a staff member, please phone the school and we will take care of this.

Thursday March 19th Junior High Update:  ​​​​​​​We thank you for your patience as we have been working on what the learning is going to look like starting on Monday.  Subject teachers will be sending an email Monday morning to each student’s Gmail account on how to access the learning for the week for each subject.  Parents/Guardians, please ensure that students open up their school Gmail accounts and follow the instructions to start the learning.  Thank you, Junior High Staff

Update for Wednesday March 18th.  We expect the daily updates will subside once the Learning Plan starts on Monday!

  • We have organized times for you to come pick up some of your child’s/children’s belongings and supplies, in particular, those that will be needed next week when the “official” learning plans get sent home.  Monday, March 23rd is our main “pick-up” day, as well as the day we will send home learning plans.  We chose this day so that you only have to come to the school once next week.  We know teachers are organizing who will need print materials and who is fine to do the bulk of their learning online and/or using a printer at home.
  • When picking up your child’s/children’s items, we suggest that you bring an empty bag (visualize Sobey’s reusable grocery bag) or backpack for the items. 
  • Please note:  If you are having to self-isolate due to travel or illness, please DO NOT come to the school; we are happy to arrange an alternative time with you, and could even drop off items on your doorstep. 
  • We are following AHS recommendations regarding large groups, therefore we are asking parents of our younger Dragons (K-gr 5), to come into the school without your children.  If need be, you are welcome to pull up to the school, call us, and we will bring your items out to you.  For example, if you have an infant with you, please call the school upon arrival. 
  • Our gr 6-9 Dragons will need to access their lockers, so they are welcome to come into the school, without parents, in order to keep our numbers down. 
  • We apologize because it goes against every fibre of our being NOT to be inviting and inclusive of EVERY Dragon family member, but we do have to keep everyone’s health and safety in the forefront of our minds and actions. 
  • Mrs. Davies does NOT want you to return any books that you are continuing to enjoy!  If there is a novel or two that your child would like to read OR that you would like to read to your child, please email Mrs. Davies to get the book(s) ready, and/or stop by the Learning Commons.
  • The pick-up schedule, noted below, may not work for your family.  If that is the case, please reply to this email to coordinate a time that does work.

Update for Tuesday March 17th:  

We hope all is well with everyone. We are missing the hustle and bustle of having students, parents, and volunteers in the building. We care deeply about all of you, and we will communicate regularly to keep you updated on how learning will look in the coming days. 

RDL is still your community, where people come together to learn, build lasting relationships, and create an empathetic community. While that will look different over the course of the next few months, we are committed to you and your family. The following is some information regarding what is coming up in the near future, as well as some supports available.

Although the Government of Alberta has made the decision to close all K-12 classrooms indefinitely, our students are still "ours", and we are busy at work preparing lessons and resources to share with you next week. At this point, we are spending our days developing plans for your child/children’s learning, and we will forward more specific information to you on Monday, March 23.

Your child’s teacher will be updating you throughout this process, in addition to emails from administration, and our website https://reddeerlake.fsd38.ab.ca/  Please check your email, and the website for more updates and communication.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Additional supports for families are also available on the FSD webpage. If you go to the Parents Link, and then click on the Parent Learning Link, there are resources for families including: how to talk to your children about COVID-19, the importance of structuring your day, as well as Mental Wellness Supports.

Tomorrow, we will be sending information about how you can stop by and pick up your child/children's materials that they will need for learning. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding. Thank you for trusting in our school, and for your support as we maneuver through these unprecedented times. We really miss all of our RDL families and students, and wish you all the best during this unique situation.

Update for Monday March 16th:

Our staff is all at RDL today, working hard to complete Learner Profiles and Individualized Learning Plans in preparation to send home via email next week.  As we await more direction and guidelines from the province about what the upcoming learning may look like for our students, we are planning and pulling together resources and ideas.    

 Until we know more about what the learning will look like, we are suggesting that students’ items remain at school.  That way, you can come by to pick up precisely what you need.  If, however, there are any items that your child/children have left at school that are needed right away (e.g. eyeglasses, medication, specialized equipment, personal devices), please reply to this email and we will arrange for pick up as soon as possible. 

 We recognize the significant impact that the cancellation of classes has on your lives, and appreciate your patience and understanding as we strive to keep our community safe.
