Welcome to RDL's New Principal
Derek Markides Principal, Red Deer Lake School.
With strong leadership experience, in K-12 settings, Mr. Markides enthusiastically joins the Red Deer Lake school community as Principal. Mr. Markides is currently Vice-Principal at École Foothills Composite High School/Alberta High School of Fine Arts (10-12) where he has served since January of 2018. Prior to that assignment, Mr. Markides was Vice-Principal of Cayley School (K-8). Derek’s passion for Numeracy, Sciences, Literacy, and Indigenous pedagogies are among the many strengths he brings to this role. Mathematics and Physics instructional excellence at École Secondaire Highwood High School (9-12) and international experience at The International School of Macao (pre K-12) have also informed his instructional leadership. Further, during his FSD career, Derek has made valuable shared leadership contributions at the divisional level through his engagement with Technology mentorship (TPCK) and the Foothills Assessment Specialist Team (FAST). Derek also completed the Foothills School Division Leading and Learning leadership development cohort in 2012.
Mr. Markides is currently a Doctoral Candidate (Indigenous Pedagogies) in the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary in the Department of Curriculum and Learning (2021). Derek also holds his Master of Education (2013) University of Calgary (Curriculum and Learning Mathematic) Bachelor of Education (2008) University of Calgary (Mathematics); and Bachelor of Science (2008) University of Victoria. In 2019 Derek completed the Alberta Education Leadership Quality Standard (LQS) courses and holds his LQS certificate.

Derek shares the following: “I am incredibly honored and humbled by the opportunity to work and learn alongside the students, staff, and families at Red Deer Lake School. I look forward to seeking the consultation of the school and local communities as we work together to continue to build trust and relationality.
